Walk Notes

Halesworth used to be at the head of the navigable River Blyth back in the 18th century and wherries used to trade along this river down to Blythborough, Walberswick and the open sea. I have been reliably told that when a wheey arrived at the town quay the church bells would ring to bring down the men to unload the cargo. Later the narrow guage railway was put in to line the town with Southwold. This lasted from 1879 until 1929 when road transport forced it into closure.

The are that has been allocated to the Millennium Green comprises of four meadows in the flood plain of the Blyth Special Landscape Area and the Suffolk River Valleys Environmentally Sensitive Area. The area consists of grassland that is subject to regular winter flooding. In the summer cattle graze the area. Wildlife that can be seen are voles and otters, kingfishers and grey wagtail.

This is a fine way to while away a couple of hours for anyone visiting the town of Halesworth.
