This handy Hiking Time Calculator provides a simple method to determine the expected time from entering the average walking speed on a flat surface, the distance to cover, the ascent and descent of the trail, the rucksack weight and the Terrain Type.
The calculation method employs Naismith's Rule which allows 1 hour for every 5 km walked + 1 hour for every 600 meters of ascent + 1 hour for every 1200 meters of descent. Time is also adjusted for rucksack weight where an addtional 10% increase in time is allowed for every 10 kg of pack load. Terrain selection allows an increase in time with additional 10% for rough, 20% for very rough and 40% for challenging terrains.
