Walk Notes
This was the easiest part of the Ridgeway thus far with the route being generally less arduous. The memorable aspect of this section of the Ridgeway walk was standing in the woodland waiting for the rain to stop before heading across a field. There was also the crossing of a golf course, which is never easy as, in general, waymarkers are few and far between on such landscapes and one has to rely upon map reading skills. On this specific course, the waymarkers conspicuous in their absence but we managed to navigate through it. As we approached the exit close to the clubhouse a golfer pointed us in the right direction and then offered us a lift! We flatly turned this down, the walking was what made this hike worth doing.
Part of the route follows Grim's Ditch and although the purpose of this earthwork is not clear Archaeologists agree that it dates from the Iron Age. This strecthes from Nuffield through to Mongewell and is a long straight line.
The walk ended at Wallingford campsite. It was a Saturday evening and attempting to get food in the town pubs where the clientele was only there for drinking, was impossible. We ended up at a pizza takeaway.
