Porlock Weir to Minehead Walk Summary

Salt marsh

A 9 mile walk along the SWCP between Porlock Weir and Minehead

Walking in an anti-clockwise direction, this walk marks the end to the South West Coast Path. There are no gold embossed certificates handed out, no congratulating parades to cheer the triumphant walker across the finishing line, or national media around to film the completion of this mammoth 630 mile trek. Just a sculpture of a pair of hands holding an OS map and a self-satisfying sense of achievement with a hint of sadness that the trail is over and another challenge must be sought... or maybe turn around and do it all again in the opposite direction!

Somerset Coast Path - Minehead to Watchet

Salt marsh

An easy ramble along the Somerset Coast Path between Minehead and Watchet

This is a scenic and easy walk along the Somerset Coast Path between Minehead and Watchet with connections between the ends provided by either bus service or the heritage railway that follows the route.

Parking in this area of Somerset is expensive and an alternative is to make use of the ample free parking along the coast road at the hamlet of Blue Anchor, midway along the route.

The walk encompasses a varied scenery from the flat open areas of Dunster Beach to the rolling hills between Blue Anchor and Watchet which require a little effort to ascend but are nothing too challenging. There are some beach sections although a cycle track provides an easier option from the hard going across the large pebbles

It must be noted that on this instance of the walk during September 2018 there had been cliff fall just beyond the Blue Anchor pub at the eastern end of the hamlet of the same name which had blocked the path. This necessitated following a waymarked diversion along permissive paths that follow the roadside then descend down to the cliffside through the woods known as Three Acre Covert. A stroll that made a pleasant change of scenery.

SWCP - Portland Circular Walk

Portland Bill

A 13.5 mile walk along the South West Coast Path around the Isle of Portland

A fascinating wander around the Isle of Portland, the peninsular that lies on the southern tip of Weymouth. Not overly challenging but with a few climbs and descents. The coastline is full of the relics and remnants of the quarries where the renowned Portland Stone was extracted. The tip of the island features the Portland Bill lighthouse and is a major tourist attraction in this part of the world, although few of these visitors take the coast path to get there.

South West Coast Path - Tintagel to Port Isaac

Jacket's Point

An 9 mile walk along the South West Coast Path between Tintagel and Port Isaac

Very much a demanding and challenging walk that is not for the casual walker. Despite the strenuous terrain, the scenery is magnificent and there is a true sense of achievement by the end of the hike that makes the pint of ale at the Port Gaverne Hotel even more rewarding. Oh, and beware of the ghosts of Backways Cove.

Mousehole

A 7 mile walk along the Cornish section of the South West Coast Path between Mousehole and Marazion

A simple and easy walk along paved coastal areas of Mousehole, Newlyn, Penzance and Marazion. As on this occasion, even if it is dreadful weather, the path can still be completed safely and without aid of maps or navigation aids.

South West Coast Path - Roseland Peninsular Circular Walk

Place ferry

A 9 mile circular walk around Cornwall's Roseland Peninsular taking in St Anthony's Head and Portscatho.

A simple and not too strenuous walk around the tip of the Roseland Peninsular. This encompasses the section of the South West Coast Path between Portscatho and the ferry point at Place that provides a service across to Falmouth. St Anthony's Head lighthouse with its adjacent Military Battery and the village of Portscatho are the highlights of this simple circular walk.
