Walk Notes
A walk using country lanes, footpaths, permissive paths and tracks to create a route between Holt and Melton Constable attempting to follow the route of the old M&GN railway line that linked the two towns. The railway is long gone but there is some very pleasant Norfolk countryside to wander through.
The route takes in parkland around Spout Hills immediately to the south-west of the town of Holt which is worth taking some time to explore. Further on there is a ford to cross although a footbridge is provided. There are churches to view and explore and slow country lanes that make for easy walking. Melton Constable is the destination but this once thriving railway junction is now a quiet town with only a few remindeers of its once great status as a major junction on the M&GN line.
Return is along footpaths through to Hunsworth where The Honeybell pub makes an perfect place to rest and refresh oneself. The pub overlooks the green and is full of character and even though this walk has to come a little off route it is well worth seeking out.
The route was originally planned to return from Hunsworth via permissive paths through the woods of the Stody estate and onto Holt country park. Fortunately a local couple in the pub related that all of these permissive paths across the Stody estate have now been closed, reputedly because of cuts made in the government funding that was received by the estate. The alternative here is to return to Little Thornage and retrace ones steps back into Holt. An alternative, related by some locals, albeit some distance longer, would be to take the road and lanes via Edgfield and through to Hempstead to pick up the Holt to Mannington trail.
